What Is URA? An Introduction to Seasonal Orientation

Most modern systems treat time as a flat, linear resource — something to be optimized, scheduled, and filled. URA begins from a different premise: time is cyclical, and human beings are seasonal organisms.

URA stands for a temporal orientation system. It uses astronomical data — primarily the positions of the Sun and Moon — to map where you are within recurring natural cycles. The goal is not prediction or personality typing. It is coherence: knowing what kind of time you are in, and what mode of engagement is appropriate.

At the heart of URA is the Ascendant Year. This is a personal annual cycle that begins when the transiting Sun returns to your natal Ascendant degree — the point where the ecliptic crossed the eastern horizon at your birth. From that moment, the angular distance between the Sun and your Ascendant defines your position within an 8-phase seasonal cycle.

These eight phases — Emergence, Establishment, Differentiation, Bonding, Assertion, Transformation, Dissolution, and Witnessing — are not personality traits or emotional states. They are modes of engagement. Each phase corresponds to an ecological function, a psychological orientation, and a quality of motion.

When effort aligns with phase, things feel coherent. When it doesn't, friction increases. URA doesn't prescribe what to do. It orients you to when you are, so that your own judgment can operate with better information.

URA also tracks the Progressed Lunation Cycle — a 29-30 year developmental arc that mirrors the monthly lunar phases but unfolds across decades of life. Together, these two cycles provide both a yearly rhythm and a lifelong context.

This is not astrology in the traditional sense. URA treats astrological data as timing information, not as destiny or character assessment. Planets describe forces. Signs describe instinctual zones. The URA cycle describes when and how those forces are metabolized.

If you've ever felt that your effort was perfectly timed — or completely mistimed — you already have an intuition for what URA makes explicit. Time has texture. Seasons are real. And human beings thrive when they stop arguing with their own timing.
